Top 5 Questions to Ask Your Budtender or Cannista

June 22, 2022

Many don’t realize that being a budtender or cannista at a dispensary is a job that requires a lot of knowledge. Good customer service in the cannabis industry means more than being pleasant, attentive, and providing a smooth retail experience. The lion’s share of the role consists of cannabis and cannabis product knowledge. More specifically, it means combining these two knowledge bases to give advice and find the perfect item for the customer.

It’s important to note that by “customers,” we mean all customers. Not just the first-timers or cannabis curious, this also includes seasoned cannabis consumers and connoisseurs as well. New products and novel preparations are popping up all the time as the industry rapidly advances, so you may not be aware of what you’re missing.

You might know that the budtenders and cannistas at Happy Dayz are full of this information, but you might not know the best way to go about getting it. What questions should you ask? What should you be aware of? We’ve got you covered, with advice from a seasoned budtender.

1) “What Strains are Available?”

Ask what strains are available in your preferred type of cannabis. The generic large distinctions are sativa, indica, and hybrids of the two (which may be right down the middle, or lean one way or the other). If you’re unsure about the distinctions between these types, ask your budtender or cannista about that as well, they’ll be happy to break it down for you.

Remember, a strain you like may be available in many different preparations, be it flower, concentrate or otherwise. Even connoisseurs, who know what sort of terpenes or genetics they like, might not be aware of where they appear the most among the current stock.

2) “What’s Looking Good?”

While no one is able to see the products before they are packaged, the dispensary workers will be more familiar with how things are looking. They are more likely to have tried the products themselves, or have received feedback from other customers and coworkers who’ve tried the products. Every batch of cannabis can differ a little (or a lot, on occasion), so if you’re looking for the best, ask what’s looking good. Every Happy Dayz has a staff picks section in every location to check out as well.

3) “What Brands Do You Recommend?”

Brands pride themselves on being trusted and consistent. Your budtender or cannista is likely to have picked up on the diamonds in the rough, and will generally be aware of where things fall within the spectrum of quality.

A single item being bad or good can be a fluke, but keeping a good reputation is no easy task in the competitive cannabis market. Feel free to ask what brands and producers you might want to consider the most.

4.) “I’m Looking for a Specific Experience, What Should I Try?”

When deciding what kind of cannabis product to buy, it’s best to consider what experience you hope to get out of it. The wide variety of cannabis products available means that something for every occasion, be it a morning jog, a night out on the town, or at an evening at home relaxing. Some cannabis products are more portable than others, and different preparations may have different onset times. A drink may hit faster than another edible, and a vape or flower will be even more immediate.. A budtender or cannista will be familiar with each product, and the more information you can provide, the better they can make recommendations. And don’t forget the accessories you may need as well.

5.) “What’s Popular?”

A little crowd-sourced information can go a long way, and when cannabis consumers find what they like, they tend to come back for it. Of course, each cannabis experience is unique to the person enjoying it, but if something is of high quality, word gets around. Your budtender will likely be able to expand on this, and let you know what’s popular but shouldn’t be, and what’s overlooked but more people should know about. If you like to do your own research, you can always check out reviews on each Happy Dayz product.

Conclusion

A seasoned, well trained budtender or cannista will be able to help you with all of these questions and more.

Of course, not every cannabis worker will know everything about every product and may need to ask a coworker for some input, but of the team, there’s usually at least one person who holds an encyclopedia’s worth of knowledge on the whole spread of offerings. New products can be tougher, as the team might not have had time to try them yet, so if you try one and are able to help them out with some feedback on your next visit, or better yet, a review on the site for other customers, it’s always appreciated.
